W-2 or IC: Which Tax Status is right for your consulting career?

This table breaks down the different types of status a consultant can work under, and the tax implications for each.

Status Type Meaning Tax Implications
Independent Contractor (IC): ESG's Independent Contractors are fully incorporated and act as a separate legal entity. ESG places ICs on assignments, but is not the employer. Invoices must be submitted to ESG for services rendered in order to receive payment. ICs must pay their own federal and state taxes, file their own quarterly returns, and comply with other IRS and state requirements. As an incorporated independent contractor, you will have your own tax identification number.
W-2: ESG hires W-2 consultants as employees of ESG, and places them on payroll to work on a specific project. As a W-2 employee, you receive a regular paycheck and ESG withholds all federal, state, and local taxes. W-2 consultants can be paid via direct deposit and can enroll in our group health insurance plans. ESG handles all the federal and state taxes, and complies with other IRS and state requirements.
